Searching the dig site location

After supplying the Enquiry Details, the next step is to define the Location. This article explains the first step, which is to search for the site.

There are three different options to conduct your location search:

  • Coordinate
  • Postcode/Town
  • Road Name

Coordinate

Select the format of the coordinates you will be entering, then enter the coordinates below:

  • Easting/Northing: BNG projection, e.g. Easting: 602321 / Northing: 145010
  • Alphanumeric: Grid values, e.g. SK27
  • Latitude/Longitude: Decimal degrees, e.g. Longitude: -2.989314 / Latitude: 56.469753

Note: if you have coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds, these will need to be converted before they can be entered. You can use a third party tool, such as Grid Reference Finder, to convert this.

Click Search to load a map on the right-hand side of the screen with a 50m Circle drawing centred over the coordinates (or the centre point of the grid):

If this covers the site, click Next to finalise the enquiry. If it does not, you can manually draw the dig site.

Degrees, Minutes and Seconds

These types of coordinates (e.g. 55°51’36.5″N 4°15’09.0″W) will need to be converted before they can be searched in LSBUD. The easiest way to do this is in Google Maps.

  1. Enter the coordinates into the search bar in the format shown below, with a space dividing each degree/minute/second, and a comma (or a space) dividing the latitude and longitude:

Note: for longitudinal degrees West instead of degrees East, a minus (hyphen) will need to be placed before it to show it’s “negative degrees East”.
  2. Press the “search” magnifying glass button or hit Enter on your keyboard. The map will load the coordinate position, indicated with a red pin LSBUDNG017a.png (please check to make sure it has loaded in the right place). Below the search bar it will now provide the equivalent decimal coordinates for that position:

These decimal coordinates can then be used to search the Latitude/Longitude in LSBUD.

Postcode/Town

Enter either the name of the town/suburb you require, or the postcode. Postcodes can be entered partially or complete:

Road Name

Enter either a full or partial road name. It is not necessary to include the street type, e.g. Road, Avenue. Then, enter the Town/Village name, and again this can be either the full name or a partial search, e.g. “Lon” rather than “London”:
