National Safe Digging Week 2026 once again brought together organisations from across the utility, construction and infrastructure sectors. The campaign promoted safer digging practices and raised awareness of the risks associated with damaging buried assets.

The dedicated week of safety awareness generated strong engagement across digital channels. More importantly, it demonstrated the industry’s continued commitment to improving safety standards and reducing utility strikes.

Through educational content, industry resources, videos and social media activity, National Safe Digging Week gave organisations a platform to share their own best practice. It also reinforced the importance of carrying out utility searches and planning work safely before digging begins.

A key strength of this year’s campaign was the excellent level of participation. Seventeen organisations actively engaged with the initiative. They requested campaign materials, created original content and shared National Safe Digging Week messages with their audiences.

Encouraging support came from a wide range of organisations. These included utility companies, contractors, equipment manufacturers and industry suppliers. Together, they helped amplify important safety messages and support utility strike prevention.

Several organisations also created bespoke, original and compelling content. Videos produced by Cadent, MachineTech and Linewatch complemented a wide range of social media posts shared throughout the week.

Other organisations that supported the campaign included Northern Powergrid, the Energy Networks Association (ENA), Last Mile, Overpipe UK, Advanced Electricity Networks, McVeigh Parker and Depotnet. This broad industry support highlights a shared commitment to safe digging and the protection of underground utility assets.

LSBUD Campaign Resources Continue to Support Safe Digging

National Safe Digging Week also maintained a strong presence on the LSBUD website. The campaign page became one of the most visited landing pages during the week.

Interest in campaign resources and guidance remained strong throughout the campaign period. This helped direct industry professionals towards practical information and support.

The campaign also increased awareness of LSBUD’s utility search service. Organisations were encouraged to access information relating to underground utility assets, buried infrastructure and safe digging planning before breaking ground.

Importantly, campaign data suggests that awareness generated during National Safe Digging Week translated into real action and further engagement with LSBUD services.

While enquiry volumes and new user registrations remained broadly consistent during the campaign week, both measures increased during the following week. This encouragingly indicates that campaign messages continue to influence behaviour, even after the awareness week has ended.

Increased Engagement in Utility Searches

The increase in activity is particularly encouraging. National Safe Digging Week aims not only to raise awareness but also to inspire action.

More individuals and organisations searched for underground utility assets after the campaign. Many also made greater use of LSBUD services and accessed utility mapping information before carrying out digging work.

The increase in enquiries and registrations suggests that campaign messages successfully reinforced the importance of Searching Before You Dig. The campaign also promoted the use of safe digging tools and good digging practices.

Supporting Utility Mapping and Asset Awareness

The increase in engagement highlights the growing importance of utility mapping, utility asset registers and accurate underground utility information.

These resources help organisations identify buried infrastructure before work starts. They also play an important role in improving safety, reducing operational risks and preventing utility strikes.

Greater awareness of utility mapping data supports better project planning. It also helps ensure digging works can be completed more safely and efficiently.

Industry Collaboration Continues to Drive Progress

The success of National Safe Digging Week 2026 reflects the power of industry collaboration.

By bringing organisations together around a common goal, the campaign continues to promote safer working practices and helps to prevent utility strikes.

The campaign also supports an essential culture where checking for buried infrastructure becomes standard practice before digging begins.

As awareness grows year after year, National Safe Digging Week remains an important opportunity for the industry to work together and share knowledge.

The continued promotion of safe digging, utility mapping, utility asset registers and underground utility searches will help to reduce the risk of damaging critical infrastructure in the future. It will also help to protect people, assets and essential services across the UK.
